Paramaribo by bus
Three hours through the heart of the finest wooden city in the Caribbean
Paramaribo is a city you don't understand until you've walked through it — or in this case, driven through it with a guide who knows every story. From Independence Square to the Waterkant, from Fort Zeelandia to the largest wooden church in the western hemisphere. For three hours the capital of Suriname unfolds in front of you, with all its colonial architecture, its many cultures and its centuries of history.
What the tour looks like:
- Historic city centre — your guide takes you past wooden colonial buildings and tells you the stories behind the facades. About trade, power, and the people who made this city their home.
- Independence Square — the heart of Paramaribo, surrounded by architecture that has stood here since colonial times.
- Fort Zeelandia — on the bank of the Suriname River, where the city began. Here you understand why Paramaribo is the way it is.
- The Waterkant — the city's face on the water. Well-kept colonial buildings, the river alongside them, and an atmosphere that exists nowhere else.
- Saints Peter and Paul Cathedral — the largest wooden church in the western hemisphere. Just wood. And magnificent. Please note: closed shoes, covered shoulders and long trousers are required to enter.
Included: transport, local guide and entrance fees.
Not included: meals, personal expenses and drinks.
The order and content of the activities may vary depending on weather or other conditions on the day. Your guide adjusts the programme where needed, always with your safety and experience in mind.

Grietjebie tip
Look up as you go through the historic centre. The detail in the wooden facades doesn't film well. You have to see it for yourself.

Along the plantations of Commewijne
Just across the bridge lies another world. Commewijne isn't a place that shouts for attention, it whispers. Along the river, between the old plantations and the cecropia trees, this district tells a story of power, labour, sugar and survival. It's not a long drive from Paramaribo. But you come back from it a little different than you went.

Dolphins in the Suriname River
Somewhere in the late afternoon, when the heat of the day softens and the Suriname River starts to turn gold, you set out by river boat. What happens next is hard to plan for, but there's a good chance dolphins will surface. Playful, close by and entirely at ease. This isn't a zoo. This is simply their river.
