Along the plantations of Commewijne

What the tour looks like:

• Nieuw Amsterdam on foot — you start in the historic centre of Commewijne's main town. Your guide walks you past the colonial buildings and tells you about the lives lived here, long before the tourists came.
• Fort Nieuw Amsterdam — a fort that carries more than military history. It also holds the story of the people imprisoned here, many of whom never left. Impressive and uncomfortable at once, in the right way.
• Plantage Mariënburg — the remains of the sugar factory still stand, rusted and enormous. This was once the country's biggest sugar producer. Today it stands as a silent witness to an era you can physically put your hand on.
• Peperpot Boutique Hotel — the day ends at one of the loveliest spots in the district. A former plantation turned into a hotel full of character, surrounded by tropical green. Here you see how the past and the present of Suriname can sometimes sit side by side surprisingly well.
