Dolphins in the Suriname River
When the sun goes down, the show begins
Somewhere in the late afternoon, when the heat of the day softens and the Suriname River starts to turn gold, you set out by river boat. What happens next is hard to plan for, but there's a good chance dolphins will surface. Playful, close by and entirely at ease. This isn't a zoo. This is simply their river.
What the tour looks like:
- Boarding in the late afternoon — the boat leaves once the sun is lower and the temperature has eased off. Exactly the right moment to be on the water.
- Spotting dolphins — they surface along the banks of the Suriname River. Your guide tells you about their behaviour and their world while they swim along beside the boat.
- Snacks and drinks on board — light, fresh and just enough for three hours on the water.
- The sunset — on the way back the sky above the river turns orange, pink and gold. Bring your camera. You're going to need it.
- Plantation Rust en Werk — along the way you stop at this former plantation on the Commewijne river. A silent witness to an era that produced sugar here for the world. Time to step off and look around.
Included: boat transport, snacks and drinks.
Not included: dinner, transport to and from the departure point, and personal expenses.

Grietjebie tip: Bring your camera with a full battery and sit at the front when the dolphins appear. The best shots aren't the zoomed-in ones. They really do come close.
