Drepada — Maroon culture up close
An authentic Maroon culture day tour in the Surinamese interior
About fifty kilometres from Paramaribo, in the interior of Suriname, lies Drepada. A Maroon village where daily life runs to a different rhythm, where women pass on knowledge that isn't written down anywhere, and where the river at the end of the day is the best place to do nothing at all. Talking Prints has been working with the women of this village since 2015. What started with learning to stitch bags grew into something much bigger: a community keeping its traditions alive and deciding its own future.
This day tour is an encounter. With people, with culture, and with a way of living you won't come across in Paramaribo.
What the tour looks like:
- Village walk — your guide takes you through Drepada and shows you how the village works, who lives there and how the community fits together. Not a performance, just real life.
- Talking Prints workshop — visit the workshop where the women of Drepada sew, and learn it yourself. You take your own head wrap home with you.
- Traditional fishing — out on the river with members of the community. How they fish and what they do with the catch, you learn on the spot.
- Herb walk — the forest around the village is a pharmacy for anyone who knows where to look. Your guide explains which plant does what and how that knowledge has been passed down for generations.
- Swimming in the river — the afternoon ends at the water, at an easy pace. Exactly as it should.
Included: transport from Paramaribo, breakfast, a traditional lunch prepared by the women of the village, and guidance throughout the day.
Not included: personal expenses and drinks outside the programme.
Your visit makes a difference:
By taking part you support direct employment for the women of Drepada, contribute to sustainable development and help keep traditional knowledge alive. You're investing straight into the community.
Good to know:
The tour runs with a minimum of 4 participants. You'll receive final confirmation no later than 48 hours before departure. If the minimum isn't reached, you can rebook at no cost or receive a full refund.
The order and content of the activities may vary depending on weather or other conditions on the day. Your guide adjusts the programme where needed, always with your safety and experience in mind.

Coronie — Heritage & Craft
Coronie isn't a destination for anyone in a hurry. It's a district where time moves differently, along coconut palms, colonial buildings and the sea. No busy streets, no tourist promenade. Just space, quiet, and people who'll tell you how honey is made and why the coconut palm is king here. This two-day tour takes you from Paramaribo to one of the most peaceful and authentic corners of the country.

Along the plantations of Commewijne
Just across the bridge lies another world. Commewijne isn't a place that shouts for attention, it whispers. Along the river, between the old plantations and the cecropia trees, this district tells a story of power, labour, sugar and survival. It's not a long drive from Paramaribo. But you come back from it a little different than you went.
