Commewijne by boat
Past plantations, mangrove forest and the quiet side of Suriname
Just across the bridge another Suriname begins. Commewijne is the district you don't expect: quiet, green and scattered with the remains of an era that produced sugar, cacao and coffee here for the world. This day tour goes by water, along the Suriname and the Commewijne rivers, and moors at places you'd never see from the road. Six hours of sailing, walking and listening to stories baked into the stone.
What the tour looks like:
- Boat trip along the rivers — you set off by boat and travel past mangrove forest and small fishing villages. Your guide starts talking straight away. About the plantation era, about the people who worked here and about what's left of all of it.
- Fort Nieuw Amsterdam — a fort with more than military history. Here you see what power and control looked like in this part of the world.
- Rust en Werk and Johan & Margaretha — two former plantations whose names already tell a story. Sugar, cacao, coffee and a system that ran on forced labour. Your guide explains it as it was.
The order and content of the activities may vary depending on weather or other conditions on the day. Your guide adjusts the programme where needed, always with your safety and experience in mind.

Grietjebie tip
The plantations along the Commewijne aren't on Instagram. Bring your camera, these are photos you won't take anywhere else. And wear shoes you can walk in on uneven ground at the plantations.

Along the plantations of Commewijne
Just across the bridge lies another world. Commewijne isn't a place that shouts for attention, it whispers. Along the river, between the old plantations and the cecropia trees, this district tells a story of power, labour, sugar and survival. It's not a long drive from Paramaribo. But you come back from it a little different than you went.

Coronie — Heritage & Craft
Coronie isn't a destination for anyone in a hurry. It's a district where time moves differently, along coconut palms, colonial buildings and the sea. No busy streets, no tourist promenade. Just space, quiet, and people who'll tell you how honey is made and why the coconut palm is king here. This two-day tour takes you from Paramaribo to one of the most peaceful and authentic corners of the country.
