Sendang Redjo Eco Retreat and Nature Park

The land Sendang Redjo stands on was once a plantation. Today it carries Javanese hospitality: warm, sincere, in no hurry. The kitchen works from family recipes, satay from the barbecue, tukunari caught fresh from the lake, food that smells of ginger and spices. You eat outside, looking at the water. That matters.

What you’ll do here:

• Kayaking on a private lake
  Early morning or just before sunset, you glide soundlessly across still water. No other boats, no engine noise, only the rhythm of your own paddle, the smell of the lake, and the birds lifting off along the overgrown bank. Time stops existing for a while.
• Fishing with a bamboo rod
  The tukunari, Suriname's peacock bass, lives in the creeks around Sendang Redjo. You fish with a simple bamboo rod, no technique and no rush. Catch one? Good. Catch nothing? Then you've spent hours with water, quiet and your own thoughts. Both outcomes are fine.
• Floating in the lake
  On your back, in warm water, sun on your skin. Doing nothing, the way it's meant to be done: light, free and completely present. Guests fall asleep in their hammocks here in the afternoon. No shame in it, that's rather the point.
• Javanese cooking, straight off the fire
  The food at Sendang Redjo is not an afterthought. A welcome drink when you arrive, lunch from family recipes, satay from the barbecue in the evening, fragrant and fresh and made with a kind of attention you can't fake. If you'd like, the day's catch goes on your plate.
• Birdwatching
  Kingfishers, herons, hoatzins in the distance. The area around Tamanredjo is a quiet treasury for anyone willing to look up. Every morning is different.
