Peperpot Nature Park
On the bank of the Commewijne river, less than five kilometres from the centre of Paramaribo, lies a place that feels like another world. Peperpot Nature Park was once a coffee and cacao plantation. The trees are still standing — overgrown with bromeliads, orchids and lianas, reclaimed by the nature that has had decades here to do as it pleases.
What you'll find now: 820 hectares of dense rainforest, winding waterways, and a biodiversity that quietens even experienced naturalists. Around 40 per cent of all bird species in Suriname have been recorded here — more than 300 species in total. And that's before counting the sloths, the monkeys, the caimans and the rarer reptiles.
Peperpot is easy to reach, but it isn't ordinary. You either see it up close or you don't see it at all.
What you'll find here
- Birds you won't see this close anywhere else
The Blood-colored Woodpecker, the Arrowhead Piculet, the Agami Heron — Peperpot has built an international reputation as a birding site, and not without reason. From the 12-metre viewing tower you look straight into the canopy. Early morning and dusk are when the birds are at their most active. Anyone coming properly for the birds takes the birding tour: exclusively outside regular opening hours, with an expert who knows where to be. - Monkeys guaranteed, sloths almost always
Squirrel monkeys and capuchins are all but certain. With a bit of luck you'll also spot the three-toed sloth up in the canopy, porcupines along the bank, or smaller monkeys moving through the undergrowth. On foot you get closest — quiet, slow, and at their pace rather than yours. - Kayaking through old plantation waters
Where there were once coffee fields, winding waterways now run through the rainforest. On a kayak you glide through soundlessly — past overgrown banks, under overhanging branches, close enough to the water to see what lives in it. The kayak tour lasts 5.5 hours and is available as a morning or an evening tour. - The park after closing time
When the regular visitors leave, Peperpot changes. Frogs, snakes, opossums and night birds take over. The evening tour — with a head torch and boots — is a different experience from anything you see by day. Accessible only on a guided tour.
Grietjebie tip
Choose your moment deliberately. The morning tour gives you the birds and the daylight. The evening tour gives you the jungle as it sounds and smells at night: more thrilling, quieter, a different world. If you can, do both. They're in the same place but they feel like two different parks.

Reviews
Peperpot is een prachtig en zeer goed onderhouden park met enorm veel verschillende dieren, planten en bomen. Daarnaast is het een heel interessant museum voor diens historie als plantage. Als je hier in de buurt bent, moet je hier absoluut naartoe.

Maratakka river — Nickerie's secret
In the district of Nickerie, well off the tourist routes, the Maratakka river winds through a landscape most people never see. Moriche palms along the banks, quiet on the water, and animals going calmly about their business because people simply don't come here often. Blue-and-yellow macaws in pairs, giant otters hunting piranha, and manatees rising slowly out of the dark water. A harpy eagle that looks straight at you and stays exactly where it is. Your guide from Unlock Nature knows this area inside out, and knows precisely where and when.

Sendang Redjo Eco Retreat and Nature Park
Twenty minutes outside Paramaribo the landscape changes. The city falls away, the creeks appear, and somewhere among the trees in Tamanredjo lies Sendang Redjo, tucked around a private lake and open by reservation only. What you'll find: a private lake, wooden cabanas built in the Javanese style, hammocks looking out over the water, and a quiet so complete that after five minutes you forget you'd been missing it. This isn't a resort with a programme. It's a place that lets you breathe at your own pace.
