Birdwatching in Peperpot Nature Park
Birding tour in Commewijne — early morning or at dusk
Peperpot Nature Park is one of the richest bird areas in Suriname. Around 40 per cent of all the country's bird species have been recorded here, from the Blood-colored Woodpecker and the Arrowhead Piculet to rarer sightings such as the Agami Heron. For anyone who comes properly for the birds — with binoculars, patience and a guide who knows where to be — this is one of the best spots in the Caribbean region. No large groups, no rush. Just you, your guide and the birds.
What the tour looks like:
- Out early or at dusk — the morning tour starts at 06:30, when the birds are at their most active and the park is still quiet. The evening tour leaves at 16:30, as the light softens and different species wake up. Both tours take place outside regular opening hours — available exclusively through this booking.
- An expert guide in the right places — your guide knows Peperpot better than anyone and knows exactly where each species can be found. Whether you're after a particular bird or simply want to see what the park has to offer, he adapts the route to what you want to see.
- Small groups, better odds — a maximum of eight people per tour. The quieter the group, the closer the birds come.
Also available at Peperpot Nature Park:
Would you rather kayak or walk? Grietjebie also offers a kayak tour and a hiking tour through Peperpot, with the same local wildlife guide.
The order and content of the activities may vary depending on weather or other conditions on the day. Your guide adjusts the programme where needed, always with your safety and experience in mind.

Grietjebie tip
Come rested and bring your best binoculars. The morning tour starts at 06:30 — sleep in and you miss the best hours of the day. And put your phone on silent. The birds hear you long before you hear them.

Slangen, opposums, kikkers, vogels etc. Spannend en leerzaam. Zou het zo weer doen. Dwight was echt geweldig.

Maratakka river — Nickerie's secret
In the district of Nickerie, well off the tourist routes, the Maratakka river winds through a landscape most people never see. Moriche palms along the banks, quiet on the water, and animals going calmly about their business because people simply don't come here often. Blue-and-yellow macaws in pairs, giant otters hunting piranha, and manatees rising slowly out of the dark water. A harpy eagle that looks straight at you and stays exactly where it is. Your guide from Unlock Nature knows this area inside out, and knows precisely where and when.

Kayaking in Peperpot Nature Park
A stone's throw from Paramaribo, on the bank of the Commewijne river, lies Peperpot Nature Park. What were once coffee plantations are now dense rainforest, overgrown by nature that has had decades to do as it pleases. Moriche palms, fruit trees, winding waterways and a biodiversity that quietens even experienced naturalists: around 40 per cent of all bird species in Suriname have been recorded here. And that's before counting the sloths, the monkeys and the rarer reptiles. On a kayak you get exactly close enough.
