Kimboto Hideaway

Kimboto Hideaway

Hiding away in the heart of the Saramaccan jungle

Three hours' drive from Paramaribo, followed by an hour on the water along the Upper Suriname River, and then suddenly: Kimboto. Surrounded by three sets of rapids, in the middle of Saramaccan territory, lies a place visitors describe as a piece of paradise in the Surinamese interior. Kimboto at its best: raw enough to feel it, comfortable enough to stay. Three sulas, one island, no reason to want to leave.

Day 1 — Arrival

You leave at 07:00 from the GO2 petrol station on Van het Hogerhuysstraat, by the Bosje bridge. Three hours later, at Atjoni, you transfer to a motorised korjaal, a traditional dugout canoe. Another hour on the water, the jungle closing in, and then Kimboto appears between the trees. You're welcomed the way you'd want to be welcomed: with food, quiet, and three sulas already waiting for you.

Day 2 — The day you'll remember

Waking to the sound of the river. After breakfast your guide takes you into the Saramaccan village or into the forest. The stories you hear aren't the kind you can look up. You have to hear them. In the afternoon you kayak on the river, or simply hang in the water. When it gets dark, the night walk follows. If you're lucky, something looks back at you. For groups of more than ten, the evening ends with a cultural performance by the local community.

Day 3 — One more time in the sula

The morning is yours. One more swim, one more stretch of not having to be anywhere else. After lunch you board the korjaal towards Atjoni, then the bus back to Paramaribo. You come back different from how you left.

Included: Transport both ways, boat, all meals (breakfast from departure onwards, lunch and dinner), accommodation in the lodges and all activities.

Not included: Alcoholic drinks and personal expenses.

The order and content of the activities may vary depending on weather, water levels or other conditions on the day. Your guide adjusts the programme where needed, always with your safety and experience in mind.
