Three Districts South
Paramaribo, Para and Brokopondo — from an Indigenous village to the largest reservoir in Suriname
Where the west route takes you through Javanese culture and Hindu temples, the south route heads inland. Three districts, each with a layer of its own: Indigenous traditions in Powakka, the history of a Maroon transmigration village, and the striking landscape of the Afobaka dam and the Brokopondo reservoir. A day that shows you how varied Suriname really is.
What the tour looks like:
- Powakka — cassava bread demonstration — in this Indigenous village you see for yourself how cassava bread is made, a tradition that has been part of daily life here for generations.
- Maroon transmigration village — a visit to, and an explanation of, a village that came into being after the reservoir was built, when communities had to move. A story you won’t read in any book.
- Afobaka dam and Brokopondo reservoir — one of the largest reservoirs in South America, ringed by rainforest and dotted with dead tree trunks rising out of the water. The view alone is worth the journey.
- Maroon woodcarving — a look at the craftsmanship of the Maroon community, whose art has been passed down for centuries.
Suriname Reizen & Geven donates 10 to 30% of every booking for this tour to local causes supporting nature conservation and children’s homes in Suriname.
The order and content of the activities may vary depending on weather or other conditions on the day. Your guide adjusts the programme where needed, always with your safety and experience in mind.

Grietjebie tip
Bring your camera for the Brokopondo reservoir. The tree trunks rising out of the water are one of the most striking sights in Suriname, and you won’t see them anywhere else.

Three Districts West
You don’t come to understand Suriname from one district. This tour drives you through three of them in a day: Paramaribo, Wanica and Saramacca. Each with a character of its own, its own stories, and its own reason to stop for a moment. From a Javanese weaver who shows you how his craft works, to a Hindu temple on the coast that draws pilgrims from across the country.

Paramaribo by bicycle
The bike tour through Paramaribo is the quickest way to really get to know the UNESCO-protected city centre. Not from a minibus, but on two wheels, through the streets themselves. In three and a half hours an experienced local guide rides you past the high points of this remarkable city. No big crowd, a maximum of eight people per guide. You notice the difference.
