Flying to Suriname — how to get there and when to go

Routes, flight times and seasons, all in one place

The aircraft door opens and the first thing you feel is the heat. Humid, tropical and unmistakably Surinamese. The air smells different — a mix of rain, green and something sweet you can't quite place. You're standing at Johan Adolf Pengel International Airport, which everyone here simply calls Zanderij. A small airport in the middle of the rainforest, 45 kilometres south of Paramaribo. No hectic terminals, no endless corridors. Just a runway, an arrivals hall and the tropics waiting for you. You've arrived. But how do you get here? And when is the smartest time to book? That depends on where you're starting from.

Flying to Suriname from the Netherlands

The most flown route. KLM and Surinam Airways fly direct from Amsterdam Schiphol to Paramaribo. Between them that's around eight flights a week, so there's a plane almost every day.

The flight time to Suriname is roughly nine hours and fifteen minutes. You leave Amsterdam in the morning and land in Paramaribo in the early afternoon. Collect your bag, through passport control, and within an hour you're in a taxi heading for the city. By dinner time you're standing on the Waterkant.

Flights to Suriname aren't the cheapest — limited capacity on this route keeps prices high. In low season, fares are considerably cheaper than in high season. Around the summer holidays, Christmas and Srefidensi, Suriname's Independence Day at the end of November, prices rise sharply. Booking early can save you hundreds of euros.

From Aruba and Curaçao

Surinam Airways flies three times a week from Aruba and Curaçao to Paramaribo, on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The route runs Paramaribo — Aruba — Curaçao — Miami and back, so you can join or leave it at any point.

From Aruba you're in Paramaribo in about an hour and a half. From Curaçao it takes slightly longer because of the stop in Aruba.

For Dutch nationals living or wintering in the Caribbean, this is a quick and convenient connection to Suriname.

From the United States

Surinam Airways flies from Miami to Paramaribo three times a week, on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. The route goes via Georgetown in Guyana, so it isn't a direct flight. Allow five to six hours in total, including the stop.

From other American cities you fly via Panama City with Copa Airlines. Copa connects Paramaribo with more than 30 countries across North, Central and South America and the Caribbean. From cities such as New York, Los Angeles, Houston or San Francisco, it's one change in Panama and you're there.

From Latin America and the Caribbean

Copa Airlines is the main connection between Suriname and the rest of the continent. Through the hub in Panama City you can reach Paramaribo from almost every major city in the Americas: Bogotá, Lima, São Paulo, Buenos Aires, Mexico City, San José and more.

Surinam Airways also flies twice a week to Belém in Brazil, on Wednesdays and Saturdays. And via Georgetown, Surinam Airways runs a seasonal connection to Bridgetown in Barbados.

Zanderij — arriving in Suriname

Johan Adolf Pengel International Airport is small but functional. After landing you go through passport control, where you show your Entry Fee receipt and ICF QR code. The airport has a currency exchange, a small café and taxi ranks just outside the arrivals hall.

The drive from Zanderij to Paramaribo takes 45 minutes to an hour, depending on traffic. There's no public transport, so it's either a taxi or someone picking you up. Arrange it in advance.

The best time to visit Suriname

Suriname doesn't have a summer and a winter. It has four seasons, and they all revolve around rain.

  1. Short dry season — February to April
The most popular time to travel to Suriname. Slightly cooler temperatures, less rain and lower humidity. Ideal for tours into the interior and anything else you do outdoors.
  2. Long rainy season — May to July
Daily showers, sometimes short and heavy. But nature is at its absolute best: lush green, full rivers and waterfalls at their most powerful. Fewer tourists and cheaper flights.
  3. Long dry season — August to November
Hot and dry. Popular with visitors, especially in August and around Srefidensi at the end of November. Flights and accommodation are more expensive in this period.
  4. Short rainy season — December to January
Short showers alternating with sunshine. The Christmas holidays make for busy flights and higher prices.

High season and low season — when is flying to Suriname cheapest?

The difference between high and low season can be hundreds of euros on your flight to Suriname.

High season (more expensive): July, August, November, December — school holidays and public holidays

Low season (cheaper): January, March, April, May, June, September — less demand and lower prices

Grietjebie tip

Book your flight at least three months ahead, especially if you're travelling in high season. Flights to Suriname are relatively expensive because capacity is limited. And remember: Zanderij is 45 kilometres from Paramaribo. There's no public transport, so arrange your transfer in advance or take a taxi on arrival.
